I like to wander the streets looking for photos; searching for unique images and authentic human expressions. I don't plan my images. Before I “immerse myself in the urban jungle”, that place where, with my eyesight on high alert and the camera always ready to shoot, I just decide where and at what time I'm going. I am an image-gathering nomad.
I fell in love with photographing people at the exact moment I realized that through photography I was able to capture their souls. I'm truly fascinated by genuine stories; by faces that show them without their owners needing to utter a word. Each person has their own stories. The ones that have already passed and have left marks and the feelings that at each moment, according to the state of mind and personality, shape the expression. A good portrait always shows it, and when it does, it reveals enormous beauty independently if what feeds it is sweet or bitter. It is beautiful because it's pure.

That's why I don't appreciate poses or ready-made smiles, and in the spontaneity of the street or in a scheduled session, I manage to be invisible to the model's eyes. The soul, indispensable for the portrait to born and to transmit emotions far beyond the moment it was taken, hides itself whenever under observation. I felt that I had to continue making portraits when someone, upon seeing the result of what I do so passionately, called me a "soul hunter".

Gosto de vaguear pelas ruas à procura de fotos; de imagens únicas e de expressões humanas autênticas. Não preparo as imagens que faço. Antes de me “embrenhar na selva urbana”, esse lugar onde, com a visão em alerta máximo e a câmara sempre pronta a disparar, apenas decido para onde e a que horas vou. Sou um nómada recoletor de imagens.

Apaixonei-me por fotografar pessoas no exato momento em que percebi que através da fotografia lhes conseguia captar a alma. Sou fascinado por histórias genuínas; por rostos que as mostram sem que os seus donos precisem pronunciar uma palavra. Cada pessoa tem as suas. As que já passaram e deixaram marcas e as que a cada momento, de acordo com o estado de espírito e a personalidade, lhe moldam a expressão. Um bom retrato mostra-o sempre e quando o faz revela enorme beleza; não importa se o que o alimenta é doce ou amargo; é belo por ser puro.

Por isso não aprecio poses nem sorrisos feitos e, na espontaneidade da rua ou numa sessão pré-agendada, faço por ficar invisível aos olhos de quem fotografo. É que a alma, indispensável a que o retrato, muito para lá do momento em que foi feito, ganhe vida e transmita emoções, esconde-se sempre que é observada.
Senti que tinha de continuar a fazer retratos quando alguém, ao ver o resultado do que tão apaixonadamente faço, me apelidou de “caçador de almas”.
