Um bom retrato é aquele que mostra a alma do retratado. Quem é. Como é. A sua personalidade e até a sua história de vida. Não implica um título. Dispensa as palavras pois fala por si próprio. Qualquer ser humano o consegue interpretar. Apesar da fotografia ser estática, a verdade é que um bom retrato tem movimento. Basta observá-lo atentamente, sintonizando o nosso olhar com o do retratado e rapidamente este começa a "falar". É quase sempre uma radiografia do retratado. Todos os grandes mestres pintores clássicos retratistas souberam como fazê-lo. Rembrandt foi figura maior, senão mesmo a maior de todas, da arte de pintar retratos. Retratos que falam.
Essa magia fez de mim um fascinado por retratar e, por isso, sei bem a responsabilidade que é captar a alma de uma pessoa através da fotografia. É aquilo a que me proponho: captar o seu retrato. Não um entre muitos outros mas O Retrato. Quer pretenda fazer O Retrato que irá ilustrar como é e quem é nesta fase da sua vida ou mesmo aquele que será o seu retrato de vida; do mesmo modo que as mais ilustres figuras da sociedade da época de Rembrandt o encomendavam aos grandes pintores. Retratos que até aos nossos tempos mantiveram vivos os seus protagonistas.
Como Faço
Cada mestre da pintura retratista pintava e aperfeiçoava os seus retratos, camada a camada, até chegar ao ponto em que o considerava acabado. Preparado, portanto, para a sua época e para os tempos que estavam por vir. Numa sessão, para encontrar O Retrato faço sempre inúmeros disparos, procurando, camada a camada, expressão a expressão, aquela que melhor mostre a sua alma. Escolho uma. A que mais sobressai - e esse, sem qualquer dúvida, é O Retrato; o Seu. É desse modo que pretendo fazer o registo de quem é e como é. Num local exterior, da sua preferência, com luz natural porque não se pode mostrar autenticamente algo tão puro e natural como o é a alma de alguém com a luz artificial de um estúdio fotográfico, espaço que nenhum significado tem para o retratado. E não se preocupe com poses. As poses escondem a alma e, por isso, faço por captar os seus olhares e expressões mais autênticos, evitando as poses em que alguns fotógrafos encaixam os modelos ou mesmo que os próprios retratados se encaixam a si próprios apenas porque procuram mostrar-se na foto sorridentes fazendo, assim, uso do tipo de expressão que consideram que esteticamente mais os favorece mas que origina imagens muito idênticas.
Mostrar a alma não é apresentar uma expressão de “plástico”, sempre igual e que nada diz do retratado. A verdade é que quando a alma se revela, a beleza apresenta-se em pleno; não porque esta precise de um rosto ou de um sorriso de formas perfeitas mas porque de tão pura sobressai e dá vida a uma imagem que autenticamente é um Retrato com Alma.

It speaks for itself and it does not require words. Any Human can read it. Despite the fact that photography is static, the truth is that a good portrait has movement. Just observe it carefully, tuning our gaze with that of the subject, and quickly they begin to "speak". It is almost always an X-ray of the person portrayed. All the great classical painters who specialized in portraiture knew how to do it. Rembrandt was the major figure, if not the greatest of all, in the art of painting portraits. Portraits that speak.
This magic made me fascinated with portraiture, and therefore, I know well the responsibility of capturing the soul of a person through photography. That is what I propose to do: capture Your Portrait. Not just one among many others, but THE Portrait. Whether you intend to make the portrait that will illustrate who you are and what you are like in this phase of your life, or even the one that will be your life portrait, just as the most illustrious figures of Rembrandt's time commissioned it from great painters. Portraits that have kept their subjects alive to our times.
How I Do It
Every master of portrait painting would paint and refine their portraits, layer by layer, until they reached the point where they considered it finished. Prepared, therefore, for their era and for the times to come. In a session, to make THE Portrait, I always take numerous shots, searching layer by layer, expression by expression, for the one that best shows your soul. I choose one. The one that stands out the most - and that, without a doubt, is THE Portrait; Yours. That's how I intend to capture who you are and what you're like. In an outdoor location of your choice, with natural light, because something as pure and natural as someone's soul cannot be authentically shown with artificial light of a studio, a space that has no meaning for the subject. And don't worry about poses. Poses hide the soul, and that's why I strive to capture your most authentic gazes and expressions, avoiding poses in which some photographers fit their models or even in which the subjects fit themselves just because they want to appear smiling in the photo, using the type of expression that they consider most aesthetically favorable to them.
Showing the soul is not about presenting a "plastic" expression, always the same and saying nothing about the person portrayed. The truth is that when the soul is revealed, beauty presents itself in full; not because it needs a face or a smile with perfect aesthetics, but because it is so pure that it stands out and gives life to an image that is authentically a Portrait with Soul.
